Trying something new

Without much fanfare I killed my Facebook account a bit over a month ago, for similar reasons as to why I dropped twitter. Social media in 2018 has become a most unhappy and unwelcome place, and it had become obvious that it was seriously distorting both my own thinking, as well as becoming a corrosive influence on the world that I could no longer justify contributing to in any way.
Still, leaving these services has left a bit of a void in my life. Much as I sometimes wish it weren't so, there's a sense in which life and connection occurs online these days, and things feel pretty damn lonely without those services. Yes, I have email, a "public blog" (see above), and a few chat apps -- but none of them quite fill the niche of just wanting to share some observations, experiences and feelings with people who actually care to read them.
So I'm going to give this Dreamwidth thing a go, probably as a mostly-private adjunct to the above. I have pretty fond memories of LiveJournal back in the day, and I've heard this site is kind of like that. Already know one person here, maybe I'll find a few more people willing to join me along the way?

Date: 2018-12-24 02:08 pm (UTC)It's honestly my favourite place on the internet right now. A bit hard to meet people, but I find that it's easy to tell if the people that you're meeting are interesting or not. Structurally, I think the best features are no like/favourite button, so if you want to opine on someone's post, you have to actually type out words, and no continuous scrolling, so you can find things.
